How to Use This Data

The table can help us look beyond a movie's individual numbers and compare how different measurements of success relate to one another. Click either example below to highlight the movies being discussed.

Example 1: Does the best-reviewed movie make the most money?

Toy Story has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it one of the highest-rated movies in this dataset. However, its worldwide box office total is about $401.2 million. Inside Out 2 has a lower Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, but earned approximately $1.699 billion worldwide. This comparison suggests that being the most critically successful movie does not automatically mean being the most financially successful movie.

Example 2: Similar reviews, different financial results

Ratatouille and Toy Story 4 both have a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, meaning critics responded very positively to both movies. However, Ratatouille earned about $623.7 million worldwide while Toy Story 4 earned more than $1.07 billion. Their similar critic scores but very different box office results show that factors other than critical reception, such as franchise popularity, release timing, and audience interest, may influence commercial performance.
